System requirements

What you need.

Computer
A Mac, Windows or Linux computer as listed above. A license is for one computer; move it any time by releasing it in the software and activating it on the new one.
Tape drive
Any LTO tape drive, every generation. XPNTL Solo and Solo Pro each run up to two standalone drives. In Solo, the second drive is for dual copy, which arrives in version 1.1. Drives inside a tape library are for XPNTL Library, planned for Q4 2026.
Staging
Optional: XPNTL Solo writes straight to tape without it. To use staging, you need an SSD or a hard disk (HDD) of at least 256 GB with at least 100 GB free, on a different disk from the data you are archiving. We recommend free space of at least 1.5× your largest single job, for example a 2 TB SSD for jobs up to about 1.3 TB. A job bigger than the staging space simply goes straight to tape: nothing breaks, your source just stays busy until the tape finishes, and folders with many small files write more slowly.
Internet
Needed to activate a license and to receive updates. Archiving and restores work without a connection, and licenses can also be activated offline.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps.

  1. Download and install XPNTL Solo for your computer.
  2. Open it and accept the XPNTL Storage Software Terms.
  3. Start your free trial, or enter the license key from your order email in the License tab.
  4. Connect your tape drive, load a cartridge and start your first archive. The first-launch System Check tells you if anything in your setup needs attention.
